About MAT

Excellence in Rehabilitation, LLC, was established in 2011 to help create a new piece of physical therapy equipment—designed by and made for physical therapists—that would be specific to physical therapy needs. The company is majority owned by physical therapists.

The MAT table is the core product of Excellence in Rehabilitation, LLC, made specifically for the needs of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. The MAT table’s advantage is that it offers 5 functions in 1 table, rehabilitation treatment, and multi-function exercise capabilities at a remarkably small footprint. This is a new inventive way to improve patient outcomes, patient safety and therapist safety. The MAT table improves safety by enabling patients to more easily get on and off a table that can do more to functionally improve the patient than any other. Moreover, it saves precious floor space, as it can do the job of 5 other pieces of physical therapy equipment all on its own.

Currently, there are more than 212,000 licensed physical therapists in the United States, most of them using equipment that was intended for healthy gym members, not patients in need of care. The MAT provides the answer for patients who don’t already fit this slim demographic.

About Excellence in Rehabilitation

Excellence in Rehabilitation LLC, based in Michigan, has only one product: the MAT table. We are concentrated on the needs of the patients from the perspective of the clinical staff, who interact with patients all day, every day. The business is focused on improving patient outcomes while increasing productivity and promoting safety with the rehab staff. The MAT table was created for cost effective treatment in a new and inventive way.

We believe that every patient deserves quality care with quality physical therapy equipment. Here at Excellence in Rehabilitation, LLC, we aim to give it to them.

About the Inventor

My name is Brian, and I’m a Physical Therapist (MPT) who has been continually disappointed with the lack of specific equipment for physical therapy practice.

I began this journey after several of my own patients had trouble mounting or staying comfortable on the Total Gym we used at our practice. I realized that the existing PT equipment available in most outpatient clinics was not suitable for many of my outpatient clients. In particular, I began to notice over the past 15 years that there has been an increase in physically weaker, increasingly debilitated, and heavy patients.

These are the clients who have difficulty with the current equipment used in physical therapy. Most of the PT equipment in physical therapy outpatient clinics are borrowed or converted over from fitness center equipment. These types of machines may work well for young, mobile patients, but can cause anxiety for those with greater physical challenges. It always bothered me that so many patients—whose needs are just as important—have a more difficult time due only to their age or physical condition. So, I made the MAT table.

Making the MAT

In 2011 I began constructing different types of Multiple Applications Tables, traction tables, and PT equipment to enable patients of all sizes and abilities to do squats—without fearing the instability of existing total-gym-type equipment, which was primarily designed for exercise, not rehabilitation after injury or surgery. Throughout years of redesigns, collaborations with industry experts, and insight from physical therapists of all backgrounds, the MAT table has finally become a traction table truly like no other.

The MAT table is my cornerstone product. It entered the marketplace in the spring of 2019, and increases in popularity every year.
